AURA OF ARABIC-ISLAMIC MATHEMATICS:        

 What is credential contribution of Islam to the ever expanding mathematical realm? Unfortunately, though the contributions of Islamic Mathematicians are in no way inferior to the innovations of Greek and Roman Mathematicians, those could not see light until the Islamic rulers came to power. The Arabs and Persians, even before the emergence of Muhammad were exponents in Mathematics. Learned researchers know that the earliest mathematical manuscripts were located in Egypt, Mesopotamia and of course India too.  

 ISLAMIC CONCEPT OF ZERO AND NUMBERS:

 The fact remains that Arabs made remarkable advancement by recognizing zero as a number in the 800 AD itself. The Romans and Europeans also had the concept of zero but they did not treat it as a specific number but for limited exceptions. In fact, the Roman system had no symbol for zero. The only thing is unlike the numbers 1,2,3,4, with which the whole world is acquainted with, the Arabic numbers are in the form of symbols. Then, the question arises. Even the 1,2,3,4, etc., could be construed as symbols in their primitive stage and age.  In and around 14thcentury, the roman notation of numbers, viz., I, II, III, IV, V, VI…X …were used in Europe. This system may be alright for basic addition but for advanced purposes, it is felt much more complicated.

For each of the fractional values, a symbol was used even in this system. Well, 1/12 had a specific symbol but there was practically no symbols for 1/137 etc. Even the basic essentials of mathematics, like subtraction, multiplication and division with Roman numbers are obviously cumbersome if not complicated. Without specially and specifically using Abacus it was practically next to impossibility.    ISLAMIC SYSTEM OF NUMBERS: Evidently, the Islamic system of numbers is more compact and less complicated when compared with other systems. For example 58 should be written in Roman numbers as LVIII and 1997 as MCMXVII). Thus it is very difficult for the common man to read and write. Of course, for geniuses it may look very easy. But Mathematics in not only meant for the wealthy and wisdom-rich people, isn’t she? On the other hand the Islamic-Arabic numbers are easily ‘additive and subtractive too even for the school going children. Of course, may be multiplication and division are a bit complicated. Very large numbers and very small numbers may also look a bit complex and complicated but not as cumbersome as Roman numbers. Though, Greeks said to have discovered IRRATIONAL NUMBERS, they were only able to draw a distinction between magnitude and number. As Greek Mathematicians are mainly Geometry oriented, they could handle IRRATIONALS only geometrically. It is the Islamic Mathematicians like ABU KAMIL SHUJA IBN ASLAM, who could gradually remove the distinction between Magnitude and number. Thus Islamic Mathematicians pioneered in enabling IRRATIONAL QUANTITIES to appear as coefficients in equations as also as the solutions of algebraic equations.

“The number of primes is infinite” is the first explicit formulation of the principle of induction  rendered by EUCLID in his TRAITE DU TRIANGLE ARITHMETIQUE in the year 1665. However, the implicit proof by induction for Arithmetic Sequences was given by Al-Karaji around 1000 AD. Omar Khayyam(1038/48-1123/24), who is famous as Poet who wrote ‘RUBAYAT’ had also written the ‘TREATISE OF DEMONSTRATION OF PROBLEMS OF ALGEBRA. It consists of systematic solution of the Third-degree equations. He was said be far more advanced in respect of Algebra of AL-KHWARIZMI. KHAYYAM found the intersection points of two CONIC SECTIONS to obtain the solutions of these equations. Of course, though, Greeks too used this method, they did not generalize it to cover all the equations with positive roots.
